Swing Club Dance At Ohope Scored Great Success

During this season there have been many successful dances held in Whakatane, but surely few more successful nor more enjoyable v than , the one held last Saturday night by the Whakatane Swing Club, at the Captain’s Cabin Cabaret, Ohope. In addition 'to two' well-filled buses from Whakatane, there were car loads of dancers from all parts of the. district., „ As the floor was in excellent condition, the dancers in gay mood andthe Swing Club 6-piece dance band in top form, it is not surprising that the evening. proved to be such a tremendous success. The band really excelled itself in its efforts to enthuse the dancers and was, perhaps, most successful when ; playing j specially arranged Foxtrots and | Rhumbas. The La Conga, as usual, proved a very popular number, its success on this occasion being largely due to its leader, Miss Jackie Hooper. The Hoki Toki was another dance which helped to maintain the happy spirit of the evening. There was a very large entry for the Foxtrot Competition which was judged by Mr Ken Hay. The winning couple was Miss D. Ihaia and Mr P. Ihaia. .. - ,

One of the outstanding items presented by the Swing Club was the Crooning Competition. This drew a surprising show of good talent and it would have been a difficult job for any individual judge to select the winner. However, a duet by Miss L. Shaw and Miss B. Wilson (both> of Taneatua) singing “The Dickey Bird Song” was accorded first place by the dancers. Mr Terry Marr, of Matata, with, his modem version of “One Rose” was acclaimed the winner in the men’s section. During the evening Mr T. Warner gave several impromptu musical items which were also received with much hearty applause. The evening was voted by one and all a most enjoyable function and the Swing Club is to be congratulated, not only for its initiative in arranging such an excellent programme,. but also for the unqualified success which attended its efforts - \ •
