After a 6—6 draw with Pukehina the previous Saturday, Paroa again retained the Pile Cup with a draw when they met Te Teko on the Domain on Saturday. Neither side scored. As with the previous game, there was an element of luck with Paroa. Teams:— Te Teko : Pope; Savage, Franks, R. White; N. Raureti, F. Wetene, J. Hahipene; J. Ratema, B. Pryor, Waldegrave, W. Anderson, G. Pryor, W. Moses,' B. Edwards, S. Edwards. Paroa: R. Laurie; K. Wano; M. Harawira, C. Hakopa; Martin, Hohapata; J. Dodd; J. Lafferty, Cleland, Ranapia, Ratahi, Ruru, P. Dick, T.' Hona, R. Hakopa. „ Paroa started with the advantages of a fair wind and the sun at their backs, but failed to make points largely because the forwards were not getting a fair share of the ball in the early stages of the game, and were failing to get it cleanly out to the backs when they did get it. Te Teko, 'on the other hand, had plenty of good opportunities, but missed good chances through careless handling. However, it was apparent quite early that the visitors had a back line that was potentially troublesome. Franks, centre, and White on the wing, made some good runs. After the interval, Paroa’s backs went a little better, mainly because the forwards had settled to their work and were holding their own, but, generally, Te Teko had the advantage territorially. The visitors failed to win the Cup more through their own mistakes than Paroa’s skill on the day. Dropped passes, and some very wild passes, spoiled some first class opportunities. Honours amongst the forwards were shared amongst Ratahi and Lafferty, Paroa, and Waldegrave, Anderson and G. Pryor, Te Teko. United Juniors Lose Mclntosh Shield In One Of Best Games Of Season ✓ In one of the best exhibitions of Rugby football seen at Whakatane this year, and certainly the best in-ter-Club match played on the Domain this season, St Michael’s juniors, Rotorua, wrested the Mclntosh Shield from United. The latter had held the trophy only a week, having taken it from Pukehina last week. j In Saturday’s game St Michael’s] finished 9 points ahead, 23—14, and j deserved to win. United fielded a grand pack of forwards, led as usual by Taylor, Howat, Mundy and Carling. The first two in particular, retained their sting right to the finish and made their presence felt in all types of | play. United’s half-time lead of ! 11—5 was due to the fact that their ! forwards kept the ball away from the fast, dangerous visiting backs i and that the tackling right through | was really good. j Those comments do not apply to the second half of the match. | Getting a better share of the ball | as the United forwards wore down ' a bit, St Michael’s found some weaknesses in the home side’s defence, i and found also that the United tack- . ling was not nearly so determined J as it had been earlier. The visitors had a really pretty threequarter line, with the centre, Haimona, its most dangerous link. R. Stead, fullback, missed very little, and scored 11 of his side’s points, 8 off the boot. Though St Michael’s crept ahead over the last fifteen minutes, United | never ceased trying, and the match j

was full of interest for the spectators from start to finish. Scorers:— • St Michael’s (23 points): Haimona, 2 tries; Stead, Kapua and Rush, a try each; Stead, 4 conversions. United (14 points): Taylor, 2 tries; Carling, a try and a . conversion; M. Brown, a try.

Poroporo And Taneatua Draw For Bracken Cup In the Bracken Cup Knock-out/ competition, Poroporo drew with Taneatua 3-all. The game was only a mediocre display. Teams:- - . ' Poroporo: B. Huta, J. Kingi, Kororiko, J. Biddle, P. Merito, Rangikotua, T. Hotene, S. Paul, W. Kopae, T. Brown, B. Hikitene, R. Kingi, T. Tunui, S. Moeke, R. Ngoungou. Taneatua: G. Hill, L. McCready, Sisam, R. Hill, S. Hurran, E. Welch, Thatcher, Shaw, Ball, Downs, Haldane, Walker? Semmens. Though two men short in the forwards, Taneatua’s backs were strong enough to hold the opposition. Certainly, with the advantage in the . scrums and line-outs, Poroporo did most of the attacking, but lacked finish. Taneatua defended soundly, Welch and Hurran doing a particularly hard day’s work. Scorers:— Taneatua (3 points): Semmens, a try. . " Poroporo (3 points): P. Merito, a try. After the game, Taneatua indicated they could not field a team for a re-play, so United will now meet Poroporo in the final. Galatea Rugby Season Officially Closed' • The Galatea Rugby Sub-Union season was brought officially to a, close, when the presentation of trophies was made at a dance organised by thg Murupara Club in the Te Whaiai Hall. Winners of trophies were:—, / Senior Club Championship—(Grant Memorial Cup): Ruatahuna Club. Senior Seven-a-Side (Creamer Memorial Cup): Kaingaroa Club. Bus Coy. Shield—(Junior): Murupara Club.
