Not For Some Time: Gisborne-Taneatua Rail Link Survey
“Some considerable time must elapse before I am able to divert staff to the Gisborne-Taneatua survey. “I note ' that you fully appreciate the priority that must for some time be accorded to hydro-blectric development and other works of national significance, and must emphasise the extent of the effort involved in these schemes,” states a letter recently received by the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce from the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, concerning the Gisborne-Taneatua rail link. ■ Mr. Semple continues:, ‘‘The annual programme of works now carried out each financial year by the Ministry of Works ensures that proposals are authorised strictly in order of urgency. At such time as this rail link approaches consideration for the programme, the constructional survey you request will be put in hand automatically. In no other way is it possible to make the most efficient use of the present ■limited staff.” .
