United Juniors Bring Home Mackintosh Shield: Successful Te Puke Trip United Juniors made amends for their unlucky defeat of last season when they defeated Pukehina Old Boys on Saturday last for the Mackintosh Shield by 9 points to 3, and brought the trophy to Whakatane. Old Boys: Searle, Hunter, Murray, Bird, Gray, Dunlop, Sutton, Mack, Cannell, Dickson, Ollie, Burt, Butler, Ryan, Jensen. United: White, Brown, Henderson, Heta, Comiskey, Shapley, Goodwin, Goodall, Howat, Carling, Petty, Armstrong, Chadwick, Taylor and Mundy. Although conditions were against constructive football many grand movements were observed. United’s backs with a fiery pack of forwards securing a feast of the ball from rucks and line outs, were handling the greasy ball very well and were always dangerous when in possession. First points came United’s way when, from a scrum near Old Boys’ line, the ball went out to Henderson who'ran strongly to score well out. The kick failed. No further points were added, though both sides attacked strongly, until early in the second spell, when Searle evened the score with„a good penalty. This roused the United forwards, and with Petty and Howat to the fore, they thundered down to the Old Boys’ line where they were awarded a penalty. Carling made no mistake and United went to the front 6—3. Excitement was high in the last few minutes, neither side letting up. The issue, was put beyond doubt, however, when Comiskey, who had been playing a grand game, picked up a loose ball and .dived across the line. The pick failed. Scorers:— United (9 points): Henderson and Comiskey, a try each; Carling a penalty goal. Old Boys (3 points): Searle, a penalty goal. .

Motor-Cycle Run To Mt. Maunganui On Sunday Organised by the Bay of Plenty Motor-Cycle Club, a run to Mount Maunganui was held last Sunday. Owing to the unfavourable weather there was only a fair attendance of riders and pillion-passengers and only two cars, driven by Mr A. Marsh (Snr) and the club president, Mr F. Cameron, made the trip. However, those who braved, the elements judged it a ‘jolly good show’ and urged that more of such outings be arranged. The party left the Rock at 9 a.m. and proceeded via Edgecumbe to The Mount, vdiich was reached at 11.30 a.m. After lunch a visit was paid to the aerodrome where the visitors were shown over the Aero Club’s premises and each member had a flight in a Tiger aircraft. Mr iA. Marsh Snr. won the free trip and presented it to Mrs Marsh, who proved herself ‘an ace.’ Following afternoon tea, the party started for home which was reached at 5.30 p.m. after a two-hour run. Several of the local machines did not make the trip as they are being tuned up for the next club event —the i mile grass track race meeting which is to be held at the Showgrounds on October 2. There is much speculation among the local riders, whether J. Marsh and his Triumph Speed, Twin and Arthur Marsh on his new Tiger Triumph will beat Frank Cameron’s International Norton which was timed to do 99.9 1 m.p.h. on a very heavy beach at Opotiki a fortnight ago.

Importance Of Back Swing In Good Golf It is well-known that in most cases the brain or mind or thinkipg apparatus controls'muscular action, whether this be conscious or subconscious. This brings us immediately to one of the leading faults that nearly all golfers carry in ’ their • systems. They must know that the first and more important move concerns the start and general action of the back-swing, and yet most of them are thinking in terms of hitting, of impact and results on beyond. The back-s\ying, being left to shift for itself, usually gets out of gear. , It is impossible to step up to a ball and think in terms of the actual blow, of the down-swing, and at the same‘ time give the, needed attention to’>the correct back-swing. When the player stands on the ‘ tee facing, shall he say, a certain carry, he should be thinking of his backswing, not of the power needed to get the required distance. For in the latter case he is almost sure to hurry the back-swing,, tighten up and commit a number of faults that will also wreck the down-swing. If you can get a master golfer to consider the point seriously, he will most likely tell you that he thinks first of back-Swing smoothness and rhythm; then, of starting the club back with the left hand and arm as the body turns; and then of cocking the left wrist at top of the swing. Any number of golfers have asked from time do time what the best players actually do think about as they address the ball. There should be only one answer—they think in terms of their back-swing.
