Pleasing Record Of Carpentry Training Centre At Rotorua
Since the inception of the Carpentry Training Centre at Rotorua in April, 1943, 106 ex-servicemen have completed the course and have been absorbed into the industry. At present 96 men are'under training. The trainees have completed a total of 90 units, and 56 units are now under construction in various stages. This large number reflects the delay in arrival of material for the jobs. To maintain a full programme of training, it was expedient to take on more contracts from time to time, but with gradually improving supply position,, completion of houses will be more readily attained. “Many of the trainees ■on (Completion of their term return to their respective districts, there to develop their career in the trade. Unfortunately, the high wage for unskilled work is attracting men who fail to take the long view,” comments Mr G. Myers, Rehabilitation Officer. “The nett result is that the training centre, set up to give #ie unskilled man his opportunity of . a career, is being overlooked. The few applicants now coming forward is a fair indication that the School will not survive for long and for many men with home ties, the opportunity to acquire a trade will be gone.”
