Imaginary Menagerie
“My long-haired monkeys look better in the circus act if they are fed on dumplings. I should like an extra ration of flour coupons.” This request from a circus equestrienne came as no surprise to the ration board clerks at Prague—they were used to similar applications from Mrs Emily Vaselove, a 24-year-old brunnette whose father ran a travelling circus. They granted her the flour but a few weeks later Vaselove was sentenced two and a half yegrs .‘imprisonment for having procured enough flour to feed I*l,ooo Czechs for a month from food coupons drawn for imaginary animais. Her “menagerie” included, it was stated at the trial, foxes, grizzly bears and ravenous lions.
