Crowning moment of the New Year’s Chelsea Arts Ball is the release from the roof of the Albert Hall of thousands of coloured balloons—but in reproducing the balloon drop for “The Passionate Friends,” director David Lean ran up against a snag. The height of the studio stage is considerably less than that of the Albert Hall, and the 15,000 balloons dropped too quickly. So assistant art director Geoffrey Woodward inflated the balloons with a mixture of compressed air and hydrogen—thus slowing up the rate of fall. «
Ann Sothern has decided to adopt a baby boy to augment her family now consisting of two-year-old Patricia and husband Robert Sterling. Ann regrets that she had no brother to grow up with and will start the search for her new baby when she completes her co-starring role with Jack Carson in “April Showers.” Her husband has already begun calling on orphanages. The clothing of Errol Flynn and his 10 leading women for the technicolour romantic epic, “The Adventures of Don Juan,” is rapidly assuming the proportions of a major project. So far—and the work is not ended—the studio wardrobe department has ordered 5060 yards of velvets and brocades, and 200 one-yard
strands of synthetic pearls as large as peas, of course, will adorn the leading ladies, not Mr Flynn. The snappy new French Foreign Legion uniform will make its screen debut in “Rogues Regiment.” Robert Buckner, U-I producer, has received from France the “new look” of officers and enlisted men. The Beau Geste type garb has been replaced by a modern soldier’s uniform.
