Brilliant N.Z.-Born Chinese Awarded Research Bursary
Described by one of his former masters as “the best thing exported from this country since Lord Rutherford,” a New Zealand-born Chinese, Ivan Lowe, has been awarded a senior scholarship and Ministry of Supply scholarship of a total value of £3OO to continue his research in the engineering school at Cambridge. ' - 11 His parents had intended he should take up market gardening at an early age, but when masters at Wellington Technical College discovered his ability they persuaded his parents to allow him to continue his studies. : He enrolled in the engineering course, and gained the highest marks in -the history of the college. At Victoria University College Lowe won mathematics and physics prizes, and at the engineering school in Christchurch earned his degree in engineering and was awarded an M.S.s degree with honours, gaining an average mark of 96 per cent. There he won the Cook Prize tand was offered travelling scholarship in arts and engineering. He chose engineering. With assistance from ex-students of Wellington Technical, College he entered the University of Cambridge as an undergraduate, and in two years passed the mathematical tripos, taking the first two sections together.
