Whakatane Women’s Institute Meeting

A very good attendance of members of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Print at the monthly meeting held in the Methodist Hall last week. One minute’s silence was observed in sympathy with a bereaved member. Two letters were received from Hollingbourne, England, thanking members for parcels, also saying that a copy of plays was on the way. The monthly letter from the Federation President reminded members that the entries closed today for the Home Industrial Show and that the Group Travel Scheme will be discussed at the bi-annial Council. Letters of thanks were read from Mr E. M. Baker, secretary, Leper Xmas Comfort fund for a knitted jumper, from Chinese Cor so for a Chinese suit, and from V. Roach, New Zealand secretary to Dr Barnado’s Homes, for subscriptions, with special thanks to Mesdames Cairns and Zinsli. ’ Mrs Comer was chosen to represent the Whakatane Women’s Institute at the • meeting to be held by the Whakatane Beautifying Society at the Council Chambers in the discussion on holding a Horticultural Show in Whakatane. The president announced that two parcels were on their way, one to the Link, Hollingbourne, and the other to Wingham. The members whose birthdays occurred in September were presented with shoulder sprays and the good wishes of the Institute. Mrs Sutcliffe, delegate to the Dominion Conference, read an interesting report on the meeting. The entertainment was arranged by the Gardening Circle. There was a very nice display of flowers, and members were very interested when Mrs Fennell demonstrated the art of budding. The Institute choir sang two songs, “O For The Wings of a Dove” and “Away • With Melancholy.” The roll call “Gardening Problems” Mrs Fennell answered these in a very competent manner. In the golden thread, Mrs K. Stewart gave a reading on Kew Gardens and a talk# on gardens she had seen whilst in England, mentioning in particular Hampton Court. Mrs Stewart also read a letter that she had received from Hollingbourne. Spepial mention was made of the fats received in a parcel from Whakatane Women’s' Institute. Competitions:— A gardening apron: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Dixon 2. Lettuce: Mrs Dixon 1.
