Poor Attendance At Fertiliser Works Conference
Only a poor response was made to an invitation sent to local bodies, chambers of commerce, dairy companies and Federated Farmers to attend a conference at Tauranga to discuss the proposed establishment of fertiliser works. Despite a late start, there was a small attendance of nine ,at the commencement of the business, this number being increased to 13 with the arrival of ad-, ditional representatives from Te Puke and Whakatane. Following consideration of a report presented by a committee appointed when the proposal was discussed at a conference in May, 1947, the conference agreed that the question should be deferred until the Government’s policy on the report to be presented by the Royal Commission on the Sheep Industry, was known. In „ addition, a suggestion that the committee should present evidence to the commission when it sat at Tauranga next month, was supported. The question of providing finance for any future investigation of the project was' discussed, it being agreed that this question should be left to the committee to approach organisations for small contributions.
