A.T.C. Building Taken For Defence
A Gazette notice that the A.T.C. building in the Strand has been acquired by the Crown for defencepurposes faces the Whakatane Borough with a loss of something over£4o a year. But that is not the aspect of the thing that worries Councillors most. When the matter was introduced into Monday night’s meeting* of the Council, members wanted to know if this move on the part of the Government washed out the agreement whereby the temporary building was there only at the Council’s pleasure? > The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said he considered it did not, and Cr J. Creeke stressed the fire risk constituted by the flimsy structure. Defence authorities are to be reminded that the present building i«rthere only at the Council’s pleasure, and that the Council expects it replaced with a permanent building as soon as materials are' available. The fire risk will also be emphasised. ■
