Untagged Returned without a “tag” from the auditors, the Whakatane Borough Council’s annual balance sheetwas finally settled by the Council on Monday night. The Town Clerk was congratulated on a clean, clear document. 8000 Parcels Weekly •Nearly 2,000 tons of food parcels for overseas were sent from uie Wellington area in the year ended June 30, states the Wellington Post Office. This meant that on an average . 8,328 parcels were posted each, week in the area of which Wellington is the main postal centre. Gorse In Borough Gorse is spreading alarmingly. in the Whakatane Borough. It has bean pointed out that it does not seem to be generally understood that residents are responsible for the clearing of noxious weeds, not only on their own sections, but to the middle of the roads as well. Road Speed Limit Asked by the Transport Department for its opinion as to whether the present speed limit of 40 m.p.h. outside built-up areas is satisfactory and, if not, what the limit should be, the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night decided to suggest 45 m.p.h. ' Was It Vengeance ? Speed is the theme of a series of humorous sketches adorning a Whakatane shop window, and poking friendly fun at some of our prominent citizens. The artist concluded' the series with the hope that he would have the speed to escape the wrath to come, from the victims. But did he? Mr Hans friends are wondering whether that sling on his arm is'associated with his latest artistic prank. They are also hoping it isn’t serious. Loan Approved The Local” Government Loans Board has advised the Whakatane Borough Council of approval of the electricity extensions loan of £7,500 for a 15 year term. As the loan is to be raised by Special Order, Minister of Finance has been asked - to issue an Order-in-Council authorising that procedure.
Druids Card Evening The first of a fortnightly series of flag 500 cafd evenings organised by the Whakatane Druids Lodge, was held in the Parish Hall on Monday night. There was an excellent attendance of players. A tasty homemade supper was provided by the lady members. Prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs J. Hanright and Miss N. Rivett. Men, Messrs G. Dines and L. Henderson. Booby prizes: Ladies, Mrs Ruffles and Wederill. Men, Mr White and partner.
