FROM THE WORLD OF SPORT

Whakatane Rugby Reps’ Convincing Defeat Of Opotiki On a fast dry ground the Whakatane senior Rugby representatives defeated Opotiki by 28 points to 10. Teams:— Whakatane: Welch; McGougan, Cave, McCready; Harawira, De Lacey; Hurran; Rolfe, Semmens, Ratahi, Boynton, Ball, Mundy, Te Pou, Hona. Opotiki: Stainton; Walker, M. Delamere, Oswald; Parkinson, Koopu; Stewart; W. Delamere, T. Delamere, Gage, Poihipi, McLaughlin, Hata, Abbott, Tanatiu. In the early stages of the game the victors looked as if they had a very uphill struggle before them, especially when the formidable Opotiki back line swung into action. Both Harawira and Cave had difficulty in stopping Koopu and the brilliant Maori All Black, M. Delamere, during the first quarter of an hour but on the day the honours between these four worked out about even, Hurran-De Lacey combination worked very well, both players sending the ball on well and working tirelessly to cover defence and attack. At fullback Welch was, as usual, practically faultless, showing marked improvement in his tackling. His potted goal from forty yards out, was a beauty. McCready, on the wing,, had few chances but did what he was asked to do very well. In the first half he took a pass from Harawira, who plays a very heady attacking game, ran to the corner and, on being blocked, sent an in-pass to Boynton, who scored. McGougan, who is taking part in the All Black trials played superb football on the other wing. He has only to turn on a game like this, on Wednesday to enhance his chances of a trip to South Africa. In several of his runs McGougan bumped off three and four players before he could be stopped and as well as scoring three tries and, making the play for another by Mundy, he added another eight points with his boot. In the forwards no one could be singled out, as they all played like a pack. The Whakatane line out play was much inferior to Opotiki’s but scrums worked out about even. It was in the hunting that the visitors showed their superiority and were as dangerous as backs when they gained possession. Another pleasing feature was their consistent backing-up both on attack and defence. With improved line out play and with a little more weight in the set scrums this pack would be very hard to beat. Scorers:— Whakatane (28 points): McGougari 3 tries, 2 penalties, 1 conversion; Boynton and Mundy 1 try each; Welch, a potted goal. Opotiki (10 points): W. Delamere 2 tries; M. Delamere, 2 conversions. The Curtain Raiser In the curtain-raiser Whakatane 3rd grade reps drew with Opotiki .2 all.

A coming player was Nuku, the Whakatane first five-eighth who comes from Ruatoki. This boy has excellent hands and is very brilliant on attack. His try as a solo effort, when he sidestepped and swerved his way right through the Opotiki team was a remarkably outstanding effort. United Juniors Tbo Good For Paroa In Wilson Cup Mimination Match In an elimination match for the Wilson Cup United Juniors (the holders) deSeated Paroa Juniors by 14 points to 3 on the Whakatane Domain on Saturday. Teams:— , Paroa: L. Hohapata, T. Hohapata, Perry, Mihaka, Tawa, M. Tawa, Ramsay, Taylor, Wharewera, Wasio, Tutui, Mokai, Keepa, Weir, Rob. United: Comiskey, Brown/ Henderson, Carter, Shapley, Bdmondson, ing, Errol, CroWley, Chadwick, Goodwin, Howat, Carling, Rustic, Mundy. From the kick-off United went to the attack but poor passing spoilt many promising movements. The teams were evenly matched although United had a slight advantage in the lineouts. After 15 minutes play the Paroa backs, receiving the ball from a ruck, penetrated United’s defence and Hohapata crossed for a score. Offside play jby some of the Paroa forwards enabled United to even the score with a good penalty goal by Carling. Lack of speed oaa the part of the United backs saw many scoring opportunities missed. Hohapata Brothers and Wano for Paroa were combining very well and several times /were unlucky in not crossing the line. Repeated attempts by both sides to add further points were unsuccessful and half time saw the score at 3 all. Shortly after the interval United drew ahead when their forwards,

after a break by Rustic featured in a strong passing rush which ended in Errol running hard: to score near the posts. Crowley converted to make the score 8 to. 3. United’s back line was speeding up its attack considerably at this stage and good breaks by Shapley and Carter nearly ended in tries but the Paroa defence was sound. Brown the tall United winger, was making the most of his chances and on several occasions was pulled down* inches from the line. Offside play by Paroa again enabled Carling to add another 3 points with a, good ranged penalty, making the score 11—3. Edmondson was responsible for the last try when he broke clean through Paroa’s defence before passing to Carter who sent Brown over. The kick failed. Rangitaiki’s Easy Win In Moore Shield Game Beating Galatea B (challengers) by 48—0, Rangitaiki B easily retained possession of the Moore Bros* Memorial Shield at Te Teko on Saturday. The match was too one-sided to be really interesting, though it contained some good football.
