NURSES’ HOME BUILDING PLANS GOING AHEAD
Work Might Be Done In Stages The Bay of Plenty Hospital Board is still working Jiard on its staff accommodation problem, and negotiations with the Government Departments involved are being pushed ahead as fast as possible. The completed scheme will accommodate 54 nurses and 18 domestics. Present staff accommodation is woefully inadequate, particularly so far as domestic staff is concerned, and lack of accommodation for nurses, together with staff shortage, holds up the opening of the child-' ren’s ward at the Hospital.. To yesterday’s meeting of the Board, the chairman, Mr J. Mullins, explained that the whole scheme was intended to accommodate a full staff to run the Existing hospital, with, the addition of the children’s ward and a T.B. annexe not yet built. He felt the most urgent parts of the problem were providing domestic accommodation, and the first part of the nurses’ home, designed to give bedroom space for 22 more nurses, just doubling the capacity of the present home. Stage 2 of' the development scheme would boost the accommodation to 75. . „ He agreed~with a Departmental suggestion that it might be well worth while to consider going ahead with stage 1 of the plan now, instead of treating the whole thing as one job. That proposal is to be considered by the house committee and works committee in conjunction, and they will report back to the full Board. Meantime, detail work in connection with the approval of the plans and the loan authority is . going ahead.
