ANNUAL REPORT ON ACTIVITIES OF A. & P. SOCIETY
Good Financial Progress Shown The Society finds itself in the curious position of having enjoyed a profitable financial year (despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that no show was held. We do not aspire however, to .become a Society which grows financially sound by not holding its shows and look forward towards this next summer with the hope that no untoward circumstance will prevent the running of another successful show. Thus writes Mr,lan B. Gow, president, in his report to be presented „at the annual meeting of the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Agricultural .and Pastoral Society this evening. “The year’s operations resulted in mn excess of income over expenditure of £125 2s Id. After allowance for depreciation of our assets by £ls 19s Bd, the Accumulated Funds Acs -count now stands at £1,015 8s lid. “Your committee gave very careful consideration to the cancellation of the show and feels that, having regard for its obligations towards -the public, the holding of its show, in the hottest month of the year would have been unwise at a time when poliomyelitis was still epi- . demic in New Zealand. „ “After discussion with Mr H. G. “Warren, President of the Winter ..Show Association, and at his suggestion, a conference was held between representatives of the two Associations and from the Hunt Club which resulted in the holding of a successful Combined Gymkhana under the presidency of Mr Fogerty. .Apart from the satisfactory financial gain, this was a very fine example of good teamwork, which under the control on the day of Mr ;Les Brown, fully merited the praise which it received. Various members’ of your Society contributed a fair : share of assistance. “I desire to thank all those who j assisted in -the securing of the 110 :-new members which have now been listed. It is to be hoped that we have -commenced to make it fashionable as well as praiseworthy to accord -this support to. a Society which . - should benefit both town and country alike. “Credit is due to Mr C. Kingsley- ' Smith for his publicising of our rneed for trophies and donations. To him and to - all those who responded so generously, our sincerest thanks are tendered. “During the year a strong Ladies’ ■'Committee, with a wider field of representation, was set up and this ? should materially assist us in the future. “There is nothing further to report concerning the proposed amalgamation of A. and P. and, Winter 'Show Associations. Until the approval of a new lease can be obtained, we can make no further progress. “In conclusion I wish to thank all those whose willingness to assist as -stewards and upon our committees make it possible for the Society to function. Of our Secretary, Mr T. H. > Morgan, I would speak in terms of the highest praise and appreciation. His meticulous attention to every detail of his duties has meant that much of the work undertaken and expenditure incurred during the past year will not be lost but will become part of the preparation for 'this coming, year. To all members of the Society, I offer my thanks for, • their support, which I trust they will • continue to give.”
