College Team Shows How Rugby, Should Be Played: Local Juniors Beaten

Though they put up a good show in the second half of the game, the Whakatane junior Rugby representatives proved no match for the-, Sacred Heart College team: on Sat- ' urday. They lost 31—11. Half time score was 23—0. Sacred Heart fielded a team that " played the type of football one expects from College sides, fast and.:":; open, with hard, low tackling. It had the local lads hazed for a while. After half time, however, they decided to try to match their opponents’ play, and turned on better football than most of the senior sides seen here this season. ' Teams:— ■ . \ Sacred Heart: B. Pratt, G. Arnerich, K. McLeod, L. O’Keefe, B. McNamara, S. Finchman, K. Davis, D. Knight, Q. Allen, N. Dyer, P. O’Connor, J. Edmonds, G. Grigg, A. Yates, D. Lyons, M. Jenkinson replaced Dyer, who retired injured halfway through the game. / Whakatane: Hi, Martin, Lafferty, Carling, Carter, Thatcher, Tiepa, Mundy, Howat, Stewart, Downs, Taylor, Dines, Tunui, Petty. The Sacred Heart backs were altogether too good for the local boys in the first half, threw the ball about in a way that has rarely been seen on the Domain this seasoin. While our forwards held their own in the loose, the visitors had the better of the set scrums and the lineouts, with K. Davis, half back and outstanding back on the field, feeding a line that was always dangerous. Local seniors could well study the tactics of the College inside backs, who turned on a show that was in the i best Rugby tradition, and the type of thing that is all too rare-. ly seen. B. McNamara and S. Finchman, five-eighths, ran straight and hard,, and transferred to the threequarters right on time. The former played a > steady, heady .game that combined dash and unselfishness in just the right proportions. An advantage in weight gave the visitors the better of the scrums and rucks; but the Whakatane boys showed to advantage in loose rushes, usually led by Taylor, Dines and Tunui. Pleasing feature of local back play was the tackling in the second half of the match, when our boys decided to go down to' it and do the job the right way. Lafferty, Carter and Tiepa deserve full marks for a hard day’s work, with Carter showing up as a five-eighth of definite promise. Scorers:— . ■ Sacred Heart (3Tpoints): S. Fincham, 2 tries; L. O’Keefe, 2 tries; ( B. ■McNamara, Q. Allen, D. Lyons, a . try each; K. Davis, 5 conversions. Whakatane (.11 points): Carling, Tunui, Carter, a try each; Tiepa, 1 conversion., \ : _•
