Berlin Picks Own “Hit Parade”
On the day* Irving Berlin left Hollywood after completing his work on the film “Easter Parade”, he was asked which of his eight hundred and more songs were his own favourites. It was a question he, often ducked but this time he came through, and named seven numbers as his own hit parade of his 41-year song writing career. Here they are: “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Always,” “Say It With Music,” A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody,” “Easter Parade,” “White Christmas” and “G,od Bless America.” He termed the last “not a patriotic songr-but a hymn of gratitude.” Heard after the Hamlet film premiere: • “Whatever we think about the acting and production, they seem to have discovered a wonderful new author.” XXX Margaret Lockwood, eager to escape from fhe roles that type her as the-screen’s most winsome wicked lady is given a chance in her latest film of proving her undoubted ability to be equally successful in comedy.
