Importers’ Difficulties
Difficulties of a soft goods importer at the present time -were placed before Whakatane Rotarians last week in a five-minute talk by Mr R. T. Morpeth, who explained why some everyday necessities were so hard to get and so high in price. Import licensing difficulties, particularly the time it took to get permits through, and the dollar position headed the list of troubles so far as actual importing was concerned, and the 20 per cent sales tax played a big part in bolstering up the retail price. Price control of necessities made it inevitable that more factories would boost luxury production. He commented on the fact that, though New' Zealand made the world’s finest travelling rugs, they were unobtainable here today, and we were importing flannel from Britain.
