Thornton W.I. Birthday

The Thornton Women’s Institute celebrated its third birthday this month. There was a full attendance of members, and many visitors from ether Institutes were present. The hall and stage were artistically arranged with bowls and vases of spring flowers. A letter of thanks and appreciation was read from the Scottish Link for parcels received. Members of the Drama and Glee Clubs entertained with different items. A pleasing recitation was given by Mrs Lennon. Mesdames Tuke and Fisher then sang two duets which were very much enjoyed. Two musical mimes were cleverly done by drama members and were much appreciated. A parade of hats made from kitchen utensils caused great amusement, Mrs J. Branch winning first prize, Mrs L. Smith second. Mrs Carr won the name competition, Mrs McQueen the telegram competition and Mrs Woollett the ided cake. A dainty afternoon tea was served by committee members. The iced birthday cake, decorated with three candles, was cut by Mrs Ferguson. This brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. Competition winners:— Toilet set: Mrs Jones 1, Mrs McDonald 2. Fruit loaf: Mrs Haikle 1, Miss C. Smith 2. Jug of flowers: Mrs Ducker 1, Mrs Jones 2. Flower: Mrs Morten-1, Miss Phillips 2. Vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs Law
