Waimana-Nukuhou W.I. Celebrates 18th Birthday: Visitors Entertained

The Waimana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute held its 18th birthday recently, and Mrs J. Boynton, in the absence of Mrs Looney, who was attending the Women’s Institute Conference in Wellington, presided. Mrs Boynton welcomed all members and visitors present - and hoped all would have an enjoyable afternoon. Visitors were-present from, most surrounding Institutes.

The secretary read invitations from several W.l.’s to attend birthday celebrations, and telegrams from Institutes unable to be represented were, received, as well as one from the president, Mrs Looney, all conveying birthday 1 greetings. Mrs Chapman-Smith- was welcomed as a new member. A most , pleasing part in the proceedings, was when Mrs Boynton presented Mrs N. Clark, now of the Opotiki W. 1., with a Long -Service Badge, with the good wishes of all members.' Mrs Clark was one of the foundation members of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou W.I. Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by the Drama and Glee Club. Mrs F. Savage arranged a competition, find the “Mystery” women, Mrs Murphy, of Whakatane, being the winner. Miss Nola Rust danced the Sailor’s Hornpipe very nicely. Glee Club members sang “The Bells of St Mary’s” and “Till We Meet Again.” A duet, “Drink To Me Only,” was sung bj'- Mrs Boynton and Miss Currie, and also a humorous duet “No John, No John” was given by Mrs M. King and Mrs Potter. Miss Nola Rust and Mrs Doreen Hughes danced a minuet, most gracefully. Elocutionary items were given by Mrs Hewitt and members of the Drama Circle presented a play, “Miss Flipper’s Holiday.” Competitions for the day were judged by Mrs Murphy and Mrs Mortenson. Results were: — Best single flower: Mrs Jock Wardlaw 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs Whiteman 3. Best multiple flower: Mrs H. Bell 1, Mrs R. White 2. Best vegetable: Mrs M. King 1, Mrs R. White 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Bowl for effect: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs Whiteman 3. Embroidered tray cloth: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Rust 2, Miss N. Rust 3. j The lovely iced cake with its 18 | candles, was made and donated by Mrs R. Looney, and was cut by expresidents, who also lit and extingished the candles. At the conclusion of a happy meeting, Mrs Boynton thanked the judges ■ and all who helped to make the afternoon so enjoyahle
