English Appreciation Of Help From Local Scouts: Echo Of Chief Guide’s Visit

Sequel to the visit of the world Chief Guide, Lady Baden Powell, to Whakatane, is a letter from the International Commissioner for ; England, Mrs E. M. Banham, Christ ■Church Vicarage, Woking, Surrey, who expresses appreciation of a parcel sent by''local Scouts to the address supplied by Lady Baden Powell. Mrs Banham writes:— “Thank you very much indeed for ■your most welcome food parcel which' was sent, I gather, because Lady Baden Powell gave you our name. “It is particularly useful just now as my husband, who was till this year the County Commissioner for the County of Surrey; has been, very ill, and it is difficult to get him the sort :o£ food' he ought to have. We -went to Switzerland for a ; holiday hoping that the good food .and air there would put him right, but unfortunately he was ill almost as soon as we arrived and I only got him back by plane, from the .Swiss hospital recently. “What a grand family our Scouts . and Guides are ! ! I was so much helped by Guide friends in Switzerland, when my husband was ill and where it was difficult owing to the small money allowance we had, but I never worry if I can get into touch with Scout or Guide friends. They always come to the rescue. “I wonder if any of you Scouts have ever been to England? If you ■ ever come we shall be so pleased to hear from you, and will try to help you have a good time in the Old Country. “We have two troops attached to our two Churches, and up to last year my husband has always camped with one or other of them.. I have a very interesting job with the Guides being the International Commissioner for England, which of course brings me into touch with lots of folk mostly from the Contin- • ent of Europe, though I do know ; Miss M. Burgin who is one of your . leading New Zealand Guiders.”
