Erosion Danger On Gorge Road
BOROUGH TREATING MATTER AS URGENT Customary access to Oliope for a number of beach residents and country holiday makers, the old Gorge road is in such a bad state from erosion on the Borough end that it is definitely dangerous, and the Council has decided to accord the matter of repairing it the utmost urgency. Mr B. S. Barry, Mayor of Whakatane, pointed out to Monday night’s meeting of his Council that the road would have to be closed or repaired,' and the chairman of the works committee, Mr H. G. Warren, explained that the trouble was caused ,by a rock outcrop on the side of the stream opposite the’ road which deflected the water to eat away the roadside. The County engineer Mr C. H. Brebner, who had been consulted in the absence _of the Bor-’ ough’s foreman-engineer, Mr W. S. Henderson, had estimated it would cost up to £3OO to make a satisfactory cure. Messrs Barry and Warren were appointed a special sub-committee, with power to act in conjunction with the foreman-engineer immediately he returns from Fiji, as the Council felt the matter was too urgent to be deferred until next rponth.
