Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club’s Sound Membership And Healthy Bank Balance
This year the club has started to harvest the results of its labours over the past two years, said Mr P. Bryers, president of the Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club, in his to the annual meeting of the club last night,,.. The club completed the last season with five good grass courts in play, a sound . membership, and a healthy bank balance. ■. . The balance sheet showed .the, -club had a credit balance 'of £2t3 ■ 10s Id while T assets totalled £SBB 19s 'J2d. There were no-debts... The membership of tho club was high and the increased .subscription had not in any way reduced the •number of * active-members: — During - the - season--the club took part in four separate competitions, two for the A team, and two for the B. The A team won two and lost two. of,its matches,;while the B team was successful and was the winner in the Eastern‘Zone. In the final for 'the Watt Cup Whakatane lost tO.Ro- - torua. ’-• . .. To improve the club’s successes :Mr Bryers considered that the women 'must face up to some steady practice as the club- definitely needed a strong women’s team. Speaking on the construction proposals of the club, he said there were two major projects in view, a pavilion and a private water supply. The first had already been started. Water supply was always a major factor in court maintenance and as watering per medium of the Borough supply was costly and at - times not permissible, it was decided to dig a well and install a pressure pump. Both these projects, and particularly the water supply ; he 'thought, were of vital importance as far as this year’s operations were concerned. In dealing with the financing of r the proposals, Mr Bryers discussed . methods whereby the club could colleef enough money to pay for these added amenities and still have . enough to meet the incidentals in • club administration which were sure to arise throughout the year. He proposed that the club set up a reserve fund to meet these unknown costs. He then went on to thank all - those who helped in the success of ■the club over the past year, especially the women who had made such success of the social side of its activities.
