Removal Of Groyne There -appeared to be more involved in the removal of the groyne in front of the Wairere stream than was first expected, and the job was not • completed on Friday as anticipated. However the major portion of the material was removed and there remains only a fairly small section left to remove. Fishing Going Well Fishing off the old wharf off the Strand seemed to be fairly good on Friday judging by the hauls the fishermen there were getting. The fish were only small but there appeared to be plenty of them. Fishing generally around Whakatane waters has been particularly good last week, some fair-sized catches having been made. A Leaky Pipe A leak developed in the Whakatane Borough Council’s main water supply line in Commerce Street on Friday and caused slight inconvenience to those who are regular takers of the afternoon cup ,of tea. Many of the businesses about the Strand were on a search for enough water to boil the billy for their afternoon tea. The leak was mended in the late afternoon. Helping Crippled Children The Whakatane branch of the Crippled Children’s Society, which takes an active interest in the welfare of 55 children in this town and County, has decided to make its annual appeal for funds on Friday, August 20. It is the intention to run--' the usual stall, for which the Society is seeking gifts, which may be left at Armstrong’s garage. Freak Apple The two-tone skin of a Munro - cooker apple puzzled a Roxburgh, (Southland) orchardist. Unlike its fellows on the tree, the apple was endowed with a rich red segment representing about one-eighth of its otherwise freckled-yellow skin. The reason for the peculiarity, according to an official of the Department of Agriculture, is some freak of pollination. Such apples are not rare, and often several on one tree are similarly affected. Underneath, the apple had no irregularities, proving succulent in all parts.
