Whakatane W.I. Meeting Well Attended

There was an excellent attendance of members of the Whakatane Women’s Institute at the monthly meeting held in the Methodist Hall on Tuesday. In the absence of Mrs Print, who was attending the Dominion Conference of Women’s Institutes, Mrs Murphy presided over the meeting. v . The President of the Federation in her monthly letter thanked the members of the Women’s Institutes for their co-operation in making the Drama Festival such a successful effort. Members were asked to bring all their needlework entries for the Home Industries show on September 24 to the Institute meeting. Mrs Fennell spoke on behalf of the gardening circle, who decided there would not be a competition in the flower display at the meeting next month. Members were urged to make the flower and vegetable sections of the Home Industries Show their greatest effort. The roll call “What I would like to learn,” was well responded to by the members. A very bright thought was expressed by one member who would like to learn how to make everyone happy. Mrs Murphy, in presenting a shoulder spray to Mrs Mortenson, made special mention of the practical help given by her in making four dresses for the play in the recent Drama Festival. Mrs Stewart stressed the time and hard work given by the players in presenting a play and complimented all members who took part.

Five pounds was collected on behalf of the Blind Institute. Seven members were recipients of shoulder sprays and birthday greetings from the . members. The Golden Thread was again taken by Mrs K. Stewart who spoke of her visit to Canterbury, England. Two songs, “The Valley of Laughter” and “Smiling Thru” by Mrs Climo were much appreciated. The demonstration given by Mrs Comer in the art of felt toy making was made more interesting by the display of finished articles. Both Mrs Print and Mrs Hyde were the recipients of long service badges last month.

The New Zealand flag has been presented to the Hollingbourne Church, not to the Women’s Institute. Winner of the wall competition was Mrs Mortenson. Other competition results: Fancy coat hanger: Mrs Hanham 1. Jar of marmalade: Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Comer 2. Best spring bulb: Mts Murphy 1, Mrs N. Martin 2.
