Parent-Teacher Assn. Arranging Display For Children’s Book Week
For Children’s Book Week the slogan chosen by the N.Z. Library .Association is ‘‘.Children Need Books.” Fully alive to this need and wishing to co-operate with Children’s Book Week, the Whakatane Parent-Teacher Assdciation is ar- : ranging a Book Display that will be of interest to all parents. Parents and teachers alike realise • that children need books, but a knowledge of the theory of children’s reading is worthless without. a first-hand knowledge of- the books that are available for children to read. Left to themselves most children will not necessarily find the right kind of books and if parents are going to help them, parents mustread as many of these books as they • can- find time for. By good choice of picture books for the first stage, and then well-illustrated story books for the reading aloud stage, parents are helping children to develop a discrimination- that will guide their reading in the future. At later stages, if parents have read the ' books that their, children are reading, they will be able to discuss the books with their children in a serious man-to-man way. Most parents are very glad of a guide to suitable reading for their - children at different stages and they will welcome the display of books :for children’s reading that the Par- - ent-Teacher Association is arrang- . ing for next Monday night’s meeting.
