Cultural Co-operation Plans have been worked out for the closest .cultural co-operation between Bulgaria and Poland, following the signing of a Ciiltural- Convention between the two countries. Poles and Bulgarians will work together in science, education, literature, art, press, radio, films, sport, youth organisations, work brigades, women’s activities and anti-fascist organisations. A Dog Whipper A dog-whipper—his job is to chase out dogs who stray into church during services—is to be appointed at Chislet Parish Church, Kent. The vicar has discovered that three centuries ago the church paid its dogwhipper 10s a year. He officiated in a white coat and topper, and had a long whip. Mr Bill Jell, the church stoker, gets the job, also the hat, coat and- whip, and the 10s a year. Bows And Arrows \ Hunting with bows and arrows is now legal in parts of the British zone of Germany, Archers must have a hunting licence. The authorities have legalised hunting with bows and arrows to keep down game and pests, which have multiplied rapidly because they have not been hunted since the 8 end of the war. Germans are not allowed to own guns or pistols.
“Clipping The Church” “Clipping the church,”, an ancient ceremony, was performed at St. Augustine’s Church, Petone, recently as part of the functions associated with the conclusion of the church’s golden jubilee. The ceremony consists of the congregation forming a circle round the church, each person clasping the hand of his or her neighbour. The origin of the ceremony is lost in the mists of time, and all that is known is that it has come down from early British times. Originally the ceremony took place on the fourth Sunday in Lent, known as Mothering Sunday. Life’s Newer Look “There’s a new look coming into our future. We talk now about the new world that Science has created, the atom bomb, radar and the rest of it. What’s far more interesting is the emergence of a new sort of contemporary man, a man who is the product of this age rather than the victim of it; a. man whose music is the sound of an engine, whose conception of beauty is the pattern of a working drawing, whose mind is as hard and smooth and shiny as a precision instrument, and whose idea of things may be as startling to the rest of us as one of those abstract paintings of Picassso.”— MacDonald Hastings at the BBC. Lousy With ’Em Already ‘The town is becoming 4pusy with the names of politicians, international and otherwise,” said Mr A. L. Jones to the Waimairi CountyCouncil, Christchurch, when opposing a recommendation that two new streets be named Truman avenue and Attlee crescent. “Would not Semple crescent be better?” suggested another member. It was pointed out that the streets were part of a new block, all but two of the streets of which have already been named, and that the two suggested names would be in harmony with the others. In spite of objections to perpetuating such names in the city, they were accepted as recommended.
