“Only One Party In Hell” Says British General

In a speech directed aaginst the Russians, General Sir Brian Robertson, British Military Governor of Germany, warned Germans at Dusseldorf to stop party squabbles among themselves “or gentlemen with democracy on their lips and a truncheon behind their backs will filch German freedom from you.” “There is only one party in hell and that is the devil’s own,” he told them. Appealing to the Germans not to be shaken by the “war of nerves,” General Robertson said: “Do not be frightened by the mischief makers who scream -collaborators.’ The time has come to realise that the interests of all Europeans are converging—we all form part of Europe. “Do not squabble amongst yourselves. It may be very important to be a good party man. It is much more important to be a good German.”
