Edgecumbe-Te Teko Highway

COUNCIL WANTS CASH FOK REPAIRS i At this week’s meeting the Whakatane County Council decided to write a letter to the Main Highway’s Board representative in Hamilton informing him of the condition of the Edgecumbe-Te Teko Main Highway delegated to the Council in June of this year, also an estimate of the probable cost of restoring the road to a standard comparable to the County’s ownroads and making a request to the Main Highways Board for free money to carry out the job of restoration. The stretch of road was handed •over on June 15 to the County by the Board under powers given by the Main Highways Act 1922. When taken over the road was in ,a shocking condition, the Council’s •chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, slated was apparent he said that this stretch of the route had not had an appreciable amount of metal on it ..for a number of years, as the sur- . face had worn bare and a surface of mud was now exposed which cut ,up in the wet very badly. Apart from the wet' seasons the road had been subject to very heavy traffic for the past two years. “It appears that we have been sold a pup,” l he concluded. It appears from remarks at the meeting’that there have been more complaints about this piece of road than any other in the County’s system.
