PAPER MILLS OFFICER FAREWELLED
A large proportion of the male employees of the Whakatane Paper Mills gathered last night for a smoke concert in honour of Mr J. W. Wright, secretary to the Company, who has been transferred to the Sydney headquarters in .the capacity of Secretary to the Whakatane Board Mills, Ltd. He leaves for Australia on August 10. After the Loyal toast, Mr E. B. Brown, general manager of the Mills, made a short speech. He then presented Mr Wright with a cheque and a handsome chiming clock from the mill and staff. In his reply,: Mr Weight said he was sorry he was leaving after "nearly ten years in Whakatan'e. ; , "■ V He spoke highly of the company and went on to say that he consid- ' ered it would one day be the biggest secondary industry in 'the whole country. He closed by thanking all for the gifts and kind wishes. . After the formalities were over the party got under way with a swing and continued till the 1 early hours of the morning. Of a number of items given, a monologue written and presented by Mr G. Hern in the form of a~ sermon on the Whakatane Paper Mills proved to be the most humorous. .Other items were given during the evening by Mr J. Denham and Mr D. King, solos, Mr R. Addison sleight of hand, Mr J. Murphy ‘ a last war poem. f Other contests and fun of a smoke concert were indulged in and the evening concluded on a very merry note.
