GREEKS’ TRIBUTE
The Greek sculptor Phalereres is engaged on an imposing memorial to the New. Zealand soldiers who fought the German invaders in . the Pass of Thermopylae, scene in 480 B.C. of an epic defence—only overcome by treachery—when a small force of Spartans, commanded by King Leonidas, held up an invading horde of Persians. The monument will be ten times life-size, and will depict King Leonidas with a Maori and pakeha soldier on each side. It will be the Greek Government’s tribute to the New Zealanders who fought with the Greeks.
