United Club Scores Two Victories At Te Puke

(Special to Beacdn) Te Puke, July 25. Two United Rugby club .teams which travelled to Te Puke to play the B representatives in both grades on Saturday won their matches, the seniors 9—B and the juniors 19 to nil. ( * In the junior match United went off to a flying start and continued to bustle the opposition, though the junior forwards were a little slack in following up and supporting. The’ Te Puke men on a number of occasions should have scored by their fast wreaks- through, but the movements always broke down at Comiskey, the United fullabck. In the Whakatane backs it was hard to pick many weak spots, all going ex- % i

ceptionally well. The’forwards were excellently led by Howat and L. Goodall. Howat played well; in the senior match also. . United seniors took a long time to settle down to conscientious play and allowed Te Puke to push them around a lot. Of the two teams Te Puke played better on the day, except for the last few minutes. In. the first half the opposition had Whakatane outplayed, though Debreceny, Rutherford and Quigg played sound defensive games. The Whakatane forwards were a little slow in covering up, but when they got down to it they went well. Te Puke’s, back line had United outclassed with better running and handling. L. J. Barker was the outstanding man in their team. United, gained the decisive score in the last few minutes from a break through by Quigg, and a fast follow up by Crofskey. Quigg was the best back' in the Whakatane team on the day. Scorers: — United (9 points): Quigg and Crofskey, a try each; Hunt, a penalty goal. Te Puke (8 points): 'L. J. Barker, two tries and a conversion.
