W.I. Plays Presented At Edgecumbe Concert

A week of considerable activity in Drama circles culminated in a grand concert held in the Edgecumbe hall last Tuesday when the plays adjudged the winners at the Drama Festival held in Taneatua recently were presented to a large and appreciative audience. Weeks of preparation and rehearsal were evident in the polished performances given by the different groups at Taneatua, before Mrs Judith Terry who came from Auckland to adjudicate. Two days were held and four tplays presented each day, the different Institutes represented being Whakatane whose play was “Red Queen, White Queen Drama; Waimana, “The Veiled Menace drama; Otakiri, “March Wedding” drama; Kowhai, “And So They Were Wed” comedy; Taneatua, “Strained Relations” comedy; Taneatua, “The Late Miss Cordell” drama; Matata, “Two Aunts and a Grandmother’ drama; Edgecumbe, “It’s a Small World” drama. The Edgecumbe audience saw “The Late Miss Cordell,” “Two Aunts . and a Grandmother” and “It’s a Small World.” “Strained Relations” was also to have been presented but unfortunately the lights failed a few minutes after the play had commenced and when the power failure was found to be general, the play was abandoned.

Trophies won during the festival were presented. Mrs Hepburn received the bowl and miniature cup for the best actress and Mrs Thompson who received the best actress award last year was presented with a miniature cup. Mrs Grey received the Taneatua awards, the Comedy rose bowl and the Drama fruit bowl.

To conclude, Mrs Caverhill, who is Drama convener for this district 1 , was presented with a beautiful box of flowers and a box of chocolates as a token of appreciation of all the work she had done in connection with the very successful festival and concert.
