Strong Arguments For Separate Ohope School

The existing Ohope side school which caters for children up to Standard 2 has a present roll of 48 and 25 children from Standards 3 and 4 are conveyed daily from Ohope to the main school. The children at the side school, particularly those in Standards 1 and 2 are taught under the most difficult conditions. The School Committee, in urging 'the Education Board to establish a separate school, writes: “The suggested new site on the Maori Affairs Department’s Development Block has been' inspected by the architect and members of the committee who are unanimous that the site is completely undesirable.,, “A prospective site on flat ground at the Eastern end of the beach has been inspected and it is considered that this will serve admirably as the eventual school site when the development of the beach housing area extends to this locality. It should be t mentioned here that there are already 218 building sections surveyed in the vicinity of and beyond the suggested site which will eventually be approximately the middle of the settled area.

“As the suggested site is at present outside the settled area, it was decided that we should recommend the setting aside of this area for future school needs but that the im-' mediate problem be dealt with by the acquisition of a temporary site and the erection thereon of temporary buildings. To'our minds the most suitable temporary site is an area of approximately lh acres immediately opposite the entrance to the main Ohope Domain. “We would strongly recommend that a tenancy of the picnic ground site be obtained from the Domain Board and that action be taken as soon as possible to provide class rooms thereon either in the form of prefabricated buildings or by the removal of unused school buildings from adjacent districts.”
