Garages Of Secondary Timbers Possible Under Present Regulations
(Special to Beacon) Wellington, July 24. When Mr W. Sullivan, M.P. for Bar of Plenty, asked the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, in the House if he would so amend the Building Regulations as to make it possible to build a car-garage using only secondary timbers and other materials not commonly used in housing, the Minister said such an amendment is not necessary. Permits may be granted by the Building Controller for the , construction of private car garages, subject to local body building by-law requirements, using either secondary timber of any species, pirius or such sub-grade timbers as may be approved by the Building Controller. The permits granted are subject to certain conditions, one of the most important of which is that a tradesman shall not be employed in the construction of garages except outside his normal forty-hour week. Each application must, of course, be forwarded in the normal way through the appropriate local body for consideration.
