Pongakawa Rabbit Board To Support Petition For Exclusion From Fire Area
A petition was received by the Pongakawa Rabbit Board at its monthly meeting seeking the support of the Board for representations made by the' petitioners for exclusion from the Fire district, of a section of land in the Manawahe district. The board decided to support the petitioners. Members of the Board stated that the nearest forestry plantation in the Pongakawa Valley was 12 miles from the nearest petitioner’s homestead as the crow flies, and there are miles of grass lands between these areas and the forests. Mr G. S. Davis, the Board’s Inspector, considered that it was in the interest of the Board, for the patches of scrub as well as logs in the vicinity to be burnt off because they provided a safe harbour for rabbits.
