Monday’s Big Hockey Match
WHO’S WHO AMONG [ THE AUSTRALIANS The Australian representative hockey team which is to play its only Sub-Association game of the tour at Whakatane on Monday is made of the cream of the sport, all its players having at some time played for their State and some for Australia. This is a brief “who’s who” of the side:— (1) A. Barnes (Queensland), centre forward; started playing in schoolboy competitions. He played for Brisbane in 1941-46-47. War years robbed him of colts honours and he went direct into the senior State side in 1946-47. (2) F. Browne (West Australia), inside left or centre * forward; Browne, who is now 34, learnt his hockey in India and played centre forward for United Provinces for 13 years, with Rup Singh occasionally his partner at inside left. (3) D. Cooper (Queensland), inside left; commenced hockey at Lismore, N.S.W. and played in Brisbane from 1935, representing Queensland in 1946-47. (4) lan Dick (West Australia), inside right; this 21-year-old player is expected to be one of the stars of the side and has been described as a brilliant inside forward. (5) R. Hancock (West Australia), right half or centre half; the best half in his State with an uncanny ability to retain control of the ball in close play and to dispossess opponents. (6) E. Johnson (Queensland), goal; was a colt in the 1937 State side and has represented Queensland on several occasions.
(7) H. Josiffe (Queensland), vicecaptain, centre half; has been playing first class hockey since 1934. Played for Queensland in 1937-38-46-47 being vice-captain in 1946 and 1947. (8) P. Salisbury (Queensland), inside right; another product of school hockey in Queensland, where he started playing in 1934; he played for Queensland colts'in 1937-8-9 and the senior side in 1946-7.

Rothwell is the only player to have toured New Zealand and the many friends he made on the 1934 tour will welcome him back again. He was captain of the N.S.W. team which beat New Zealand in 1937 by three goals to one. (14) A. Schulte (Queensland), right wing; started playing in 1931 at the age of 15, and at 32 is probably at his peak. He represented Queensland since 1934 and played against New Zealand in 1937. (15) D.
