Manufacture Of Dried Milk
PROPOSAL FOR LOCAL SUPPLIERS On Thursday an extraordinary general meeting of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company will consider a proposal to start the manufacture of dried buttermilk powder, or dried whole milk powder. A directors’ meeting considered the proposition earlier this month, and their report will be presented on Thursday. It is understood that to expand the company’s business along the lines suggested will require certain addition to plant, and will probably involve more buildings also. It will be recalled that last month the Opotiki Dairy Company considered a similar proposal, emanating from the British Ministry of Food, and approved it, but asked the directors to seek a larger differential compensatory payment to those affected by the change-over. Engineers are at present working on the installation of two new boilers at the factory to replace the existing two which no longer have the capacity to deliver the steam required for the expanding production of the factory. Should the suppliers decide on the dried milk scheme, then the extra steam capacity of the new boilers will prove an added asset, because it is understood that steam heat plays a big part in the process.
