Only Fringe Of Possible Production Touched Yet
“I am of the opinion,” said Mr A. P.! O’Shea, general secretary of Federated Farmers recently, “that there are only two industries in New Zealand which can compete on the world’s markets, and they are farming and the woollen industry. When we realise that we have only yet touched the fringe of what we can do in grassland production in New Zealand it can be seen that the prospects ahead of us are bright if the people of New Zealand are prepared to work. Provided the people of the Dominion will put their backs into it, and provided that we use our brains in marketing, then we can have and continue to have a very high standard of living in the Dominion, but we shall have to keep our costs down, and we shall have to employ commonsense methods in marketing. There are markets available to us in the world for all the production that is in sight within the next 20 years, but I believe that in order to explore those markets we must have the goodwill of the domestic producers in those countries. This applies particularly to the U.S.A.”
