Whakatane Philatelic Society Views Valuable Columbus Collection
A very fine display of stamps struck as a commemoration to the number of countries discovered by Christopher Columbus was shown at th‘e annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Philatelic Society held in Whakatane on Tuesday night. The display was loaned to the Whakatane Society by the Royal New Zealand Philatelic -Society in Wellington and is a history of Columbus in stamps. The collection was made by a Mr G. A. Higlett, a well-known English philatelist, and donated to the New' Zealand Society by him. The president, Mr H. O. Garaway, in his report, spoke of the number of excellent collections that had been displayed locally over the .past year. A number of these, he said, had been made by Whakatane collectors. A competition earlier in the year for local collectors was won by Miss A. Morgan. The following officers were elected: President, Mr H. O. Garaway; vice-presidents, Mr C. R. Coates and Mrs W. Cowie; secretary-treasurer, Mr T. H. Dixon; auditor, Mr R. Herbison; exchange superintendent, Mr K.. M. Hannah; executive, Miss A. Morgan, Mrs A. McLean and Messrs H. L. London, K. Hannah and R. Craddock. A Quiz run *on the evening was won by Mr T. H. Dixon.
