Minor Earthquake A short, sharp earthquake shook Whakatane at approximately 3 o’clock yesterday morning. No damage was done. St John Church Parade ,On Sunday members of the St John Ambulance Brigade and Nursing Division will attend Church parade at the Methodist Church. Units, will assemble at St John Hall and march to the Church. National Savings Quotas . The Whakatane Postal District is well behind with its quota to the National Savings campaign, said the postmaster, Mr Hills, yesterday. Blenheim has completed its quota, and is the first to do so this year, as it has been for the past three years. All of the 20 postal districts have filled their week’s quotas. Ohope Social Activities Members of the Women’s Social Committee of the Ohope Progress League have brightened up the interior of the Surf Club building with a view to using it for their monthly social afternoons. These informal gatherings are becoming increasingly popular, as also are the Monday night card evenings at the Hostel. Poultry Show Entries Record entries have been received for the Bay of Plenty Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club’s wihter show which opens to the public at midday on Friday. Entries total approximately 260. Strongest classes this year are Orpingtons, White Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds, with unusually good • entries of ducks. Exhibits are entered from Auckland, Hamilton, Hawke’s Bay and the King Country as well as strong local representation. » Thanks To Ohope “I am thanking you for the nice parcel I received from you on April 24, 1948. It came in time of need, as I lost my husband last November, after 21 years of suffering. I can hardly live on the pension I get as it is only 10/-. New Culvert At Ohope A new spillway culvert was put in at the Captain’s Cabin Creek at Ohope by the Whakatane County Council last week. This eliminates the old ford, which, after the recent flood and the bad scouring that resulted has been fairly difficult tonegotiate. The new culvert is designed to carry the normal flow of water from the stream through, pipes and also allows for the flood water to go over the top without washing out. It was given a good test on Sunday. '

Thoughtless Prank A thoughtless prank very nearly had expensive consequences for the owners of “The Big Tent”, where a • series of Bible lectures is being conducted, when some irresponsible person or persons let go 26 of the ropes on Monday night. Fortunately, there was nof' a heavy wind" blowing at the time or the damage might have been extensive. Mr A. G. Ratcliffe, one of the lecturers at the tent, said yesterday that it looked as though someone had intended to let it right down, but had been scared off before the job was finished.

Everyman’s Tent Commencing tonight Mr Graham will conduct Bible Studies on the Gospel of John in the Institute' Hall, Lovelock Street at 7.30 p.m. These studies should prove of great help to all who are interested in the Effile. A Young People’s Rally is also being held in the same hall on Saturdays at 7.30 p.m. The tent which has previously been used for all meetings will now only be used for the Sunday after church ser r vice at 8.15 p.m. This meeting has always proved popular and each Sunday usually witnesses more and more people attending. Appreciation has been expressed from many quarters on the high value of these meetings.—P.B.A.

Police Inquiry Ordered “An inquiry is being made,” said the Commissioner of Police, Mr J. Cummings, at Wellington, when asked whether any action was being taken regarding allegations that members of the police force had been-receiving gifts of liquor from licensees of hotels. Model Pa Rebuilt Using the tools and methods of their ancestors, three Maori craftsmen have been employed for the past two months in rebuilding the model pa at Whakarewarewa. Their work is now almost completed and they have given as accurate a reproduction of a traditional village as historical records can guide them.
