“Asbeen's” Hockey Picks For Gisborne Trip
After an absence of a few weeks - I attended the game at Edgecuttibe for the St John Cup on Sunday. This game was very even and for Edgecumbe the outstanding players were Civil and Hill. Civil at centre-half, by clever stopping and placing of the ball, repeatedly saved his team in some precarious positions. Hill as fullback had a day when his speculations came off. But for this he was - quite sound in his play. Proffit, for a first year player, played a very sound game and with a little more experience should perform well. The remainder of the team were very ordinary. For Whakatane, Stringer at right wing was always dangerous and put across some very good centre shots. Bowden at inside was not up to his
usual standard, he has done a lot better. Rigden saw little of the ball yet when he did, he usually did something with it. Wyatt was not up to his usual form, but may have been conserving himself for Fiji. The half line was sound, Nuku and Cox in particular. Waller was his usual self, in fact was the most outstanding back of the day. Altogether it‘ was a good game to watch and the thing that struck a spectator most was the amount of play to the wings. The inside men saw little if any of the ball. The, Representative team to play Gisborne was to be picked at this match and this is my selection: E. Johnson, goal; Waller and Hill, backs; Nuku and Cox, centre halves; Stringer, Jensen, Wyatt, Rigden, Bowden, forwards.
