Bay Of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1948 U.N. APPEAL FOR CHILDREN
Collectors in this district are well ahead with their work in connection with the United Nations Appeal for Children, and the fact that there is already} well over £2,000 in hand speaks well for the warm-hearted generosity of the general run of those approached. Mr L. D. Lovelock, district treasurer, has said he is pleased with the way the organisation is working, but added that he hopel final amounts would reach him before the appeal closes on Saturday. Though the response generally has been good, there is reason to hope that, before this week ends, it will prove itself to have been considerably better. Even so, there is still time for a little heart-search-ing. Let us check over the objects of the appeal, consider its urgency, and then let each one of us ask himself or herself, “Have I done my share? Could I have done more? SHOULD I have done more?” If the answer to those questions prompts further action, there is yet time. . Let us measure our giving by the standard set by the sponsors of the appeal. Have we given a day, in terms of wages, profits, dividends?. If not, let us re-consider. After all, viewed as part of the achievement of a lifetime, how does one day’s pay compare with the knowledge that, in giving it, we helped save the life of a child, gave him or her the chance to live and make a living? Can we in this well-fed land of ours turn heedless from their sufferings? Are our hearts so dead and cold that we can contemplate their plight without a spontaneous urge to help? • If so, then our souls are also dead, the Christianity we claim but a pale shadow of the teachings of the Children’s Friend. At this late hour, then, let every man and every woman in this community examine his or her conscience with the question, “Have I, as a Christian, even as a human being with natural human feelings, done all I could have done, all I SHOULD have done?” If the answer is, “No”, then it is not too late. But next week it will be.
