Obituary
MRS H. L. ANDERSON
Member of one of the first families to settle on the Rangitaiki Plains, a daughter of the late Mr J. Warbrick, Mrs H. L. Anderson died in hospital in Auckland last week. Born at Matata, 45 years ago, Mrs Anderson had spent the, whole of her life in this district, i
Her mother was also a member of a Bay of Plenty pioneering family, a daughter of Mr and Mrs H. R. Burt, who had established themselves at Matata before the Tarawera eruption. Mr Warbrick, with considerable foresight had, acquired 2000 acres around the village now known as Thornton but, owing to his premature death in trying to rescue two girls from boiling water at the 'Waimunga Geyser, the land had to be disposed of. After her marriage to Mr Anderson, present licensee of the Matata hotel, Mrs Anderson came with him to Whakatane, where they were in business as drapers until 1930, when they went back to Matata to-take over the hotel. Mrs Anderson’s father will be well remembered by Rugby fans as captain of the N.Z. Maori team of 1888 and a member of All Black teams of other years, and his daughter inherited his keen interest in the sport, being an ardent supporter of the game throughout her life. Local footballers .will remember her with affection for her unfailing hospitality to them and interest in their welfare whenever they visited Matata. In earlier years, Mrs Anderson was herself something of an athlete, playing both tennis and hockey with some distinction. She is survived by her k husband and three daughters, Misses Josephine, Moira and Lenore (“Bunny”) Anderson.
