FIRE BRIGADE’S SMART WORK

What could have been a serious fire was averted by the promptitude •of the Whakatane Fire Brigade in -extinguishing an outbreak in the kapok room of Bridger’s Furniture Factory at the old wharf on Wednesday. The fire was first noticed at approximately 11.15 a.m. by Mr E. Stewart who saw small quantities of smoke issuing from the building apd the Brigade was called in. Water was pumped, in from the new wharf side of the. building and then from the town side and the fire was , soon extinguished. All the burnt and spoiled kapok .and other packing has been removed from the building and deposited on the edge of th..eriyej v Only one bale of kapok and a few pounds of flock were lost.
