Disused School Shifted To Whakatane By Volunteer Workers
A progressive step was made by the Whakatane High School Committee in the King’s Birthday weekend towards relieving the acute accommodation problem that exists in the Primary School at present. A .group of the school committee assisted by four volunteer carpenters, .Messrs R. Ellis, J. Carr, C. Underwood and W. Searle, dismantled and transported the old Te Haihanga .school at Fenton’s Mill to the .grounds of the Whakatane District Primary School. This school, the property of the .Education Board, had been standing on the Mill site unused since the mill closed recently and after persistent applications to' the Board, permission was finally granted for its removal.
Starting the job on Saturday, the gang had enough dismantled to make one load for Mr D. King’s .truck which he donated for the day to carry the building to its new site. Unfortunately there. was too much for one load and another truck was employed to finish the job on Sunday. •
This new room will obviate the necessity for one class of primers having to be accommodated in a corridor. It will hold approximately twenty pupils. The committee plans to place the foundations of rthe building this coming week-end .and to complete the main portion of the reconstruction work the following week-end.
