Government Aid
SUPPLIES OF FODDER
AND OVERDRAFTS The Government has agreed to provide assistance to farmers in the Wairarapa and Rangjtikei drought areas and in the Wairoa and Gisborne flood areas, to enable them to obtain urgently needed supplies of fodder. The Government has agreed to subsidise the railage of hay from areas in Auckland and the North where some excess fodder may be available. The subsidy will meet all railway costs above those incurred for. the first 100 miles as from April 1. . A price order designed to protect buyers against exploitation has placed a ceiling price of £7 10s per ton on rail on all sales of good, sound clover hay in the purchasing districts. A limitation of not more than 10s per ton is being placed on the commission which merchants • may charge for handling hay under the scheme. The operation is limited to a period ending June 30. The Government is also arranging for financial assistance to be made available to farmers hit by the drought or floods, to enable them to purchase the. hay. This will be done by means of Government guarantees arranged through the Bank of New Zealand on overdrafts obtained for the purpose from the farmers’ own bank.
