Whakatane W.I. Receives Appeal From Lepers For Volunteer Jersey Knitters

. In spite of unfavourable weather Mrs Print presided over an excellent attendance at the June meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute on Tuesday. In the correspondence was an invitation to members to attend the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute birthday on June 10. An acknowledgment of subscription to Leper Fund and a letter asking for volunteers to knit woollen jumpers from scraps of coloured wool was received. Three sizes O.S. men’s and children’s are needed for the lepers. From Mrs E. Lane, Hollingbourne Women’s Institute, East Kent, England, came a letter referring to Mrs K. Stewart’s visit to them during her stay in England. A very interesting letter was received from Wingham Women’s Institute, England, describing the distribution of contents of the parcel sent by the Gardening Circle of Whakatane W.I. Corso parcel of clothing and small oddments was despatched to China. Money for Corso subscribed by members is to be used to buy a spinning wheel for China. Competition next month (a) Hospital floral box, (b) cake of soap in home-made face cloth, (c) three lemons. All entries to be donated to the hospital. Membrs were asked to make this a special effort. Taking as her subject “Life on aboard ship between New Zealand and the Panama Canal including Curacao” a very interesting talk was given by Mrs K. Stewart. Immediately following afternoon tea, Mrs Howie who was a medical missionary in China, related his varied experiences there before and during the recent war period.
