MAY WAS WETTEST MONTH FOR YEARS
Aucklanders and citizens of those other towns about the Island who have been complaining about abnormal weather conditions have not had it all on their own, for the rainfall figures for May on«„±he Rangitaiki Plains and in the Whakatane area show that this month has been the wettest for many years. One authority considers that it may be ’an all-time record for the district.
Figures for the Plains show that there were sixteen rainy days with a total fall of 14.36 inches of rain, the heaviest fall being on May 18 when 2.35 inches was recorded. The first five months of 1948 have been the wettest of any comparable period on the plains for the past ten years, 36.17 inches having fallen to date.
Whakatarie’s May rainfall figures show that a record has been, set up in the town also, with 20.10 inches of rain on 18 wet days, the heaviest fall being on May 26 when 5.80 inches fell.
