Magistrate’s Court Sitting

ONLY ONE POLICE CASE: PETROL THEFT The only Police case before Mr E. L. Walton S.M. at the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane on 'Tuesday was one in which Fred Te Whetu Mansell, Bruce lan .Bunyan and John Donna Ratahi were accused of stealing petrol from an Awakeri farm. Mansell and Bunyan pleaded guilty and were admitted to probation for six months. Ratahi pleaded not gujlty and was remanded to the next sitting of the Court, being released on bail £25 (self) and one surety of £25. Mansell and Bunyan were ordered to make restitution, 6/6 each, reduceable in the event of the charge against the third defendant being proven. Police evidence, produced by Constable R. F. Julian, was that, on the night of May 22, a full 44 gallon drum of petrol on Mr Edward Jackson’s property at Awakeri was

emptied out on to the grass. It was

not known if any had been stolen. Mansell and Bunyan were interviewed about it and denied having been > to Jackson’s place, but admitted . stealing some petrol from Mr L. G. Boreham’s tractpr and implement shed. The Police alleged Ratahi had been an accomplice.
